I installed 98SE on C: and XP on D: when I was happy with XP I then installed XP directly (from Boot CD) which NTFS formatted the C: and when XP loaded I then reformatted D: from inside XP. I'm now left with a boot loader offering XP or XP!? Several ways to fix that. !IF! you set to "Classic Start Menu",

XP Boot disk Creation
Any Win98 installation writes a 98 boot record at the beginning of the partition, and at boot time it's that boot record that tells the computer to load io.sys and go from there. An XP installation, even installed to drive D:, adds the XP boot files to C: and overwrites the 98 boot record with an XP boot record,

Question on dual boot of Win98 on a Win XP system
I had an IDE disk from my old computer with data (not an XP boot disk) installed in the machine when I did the XP install. The terminology here is counter-intuitive. :>( MS didn't start the terminology, but they've stuck with it. As so many writers have pointed out, "We BOOT from the SYSTEM partition and keep our

Removed Dual Boot, 98/XP and want to recover C: Disk Space
If you can, boot from the Win2000 CD and use the installation utility to make a new partition and direct Win2000 to install in the new partition. You may have to repair your XP installation afterward if the Win2000 install overwrites the original XP boot sector. I hate those restore CDs.

(My IT guys get the jibbies when they see the dual-boot anyhow). I can't seem to find any type of uninstall. I tired to boot from the CD, etc.. but no uninstall option. I actually can't get into the XP boot since it wants me to register, it would have been nice to provide an uninstall at that point.

Hard drive added, drive letter assignments changed, XP won't boot
Partition Magic will let you do it all in one step (copy and resize) but for some reason it fouls up the Windows XP boot process. Ghost will successfully clone the disk but won't resize it. Hence the two step process. But something good has come from this discussion -- I learned a lot more about the boot process,

There isn't really much difference between 2K and XP. Might should have left ME for some thing like maybe games. I have never tried to run two 2K compatiable OS together, but should work just fine. XP 98 Dual Boot
If you've already installed a lot of software in XP and don't want to reinstall, you can probably fix things up by copying some XP boot files to the Me drive, switching the drives back around, fiddling with boot.ini a bit, and then running the XP Repair process from the CD. Let me know if you want details on that.
